Every year around this time I get nostalgic for Austin, SXSW, Stubbs (Although we are now vegetarians) and music. The first year I went, I booked shows at the Embassy Suites hotel and my East Village roommate/documentary filmmaker and I went down to Austin to try and get me a record deal and film the process.
The idea of obtaining a record deal back than was a tangible one and I was young, hungry but mostly broke so I had nothing to lose. I played shows, got an attorney and met a lot of folks from LA who suggested I move to LA. As another successful music attorney told me at a party, "Just remember Dan, this is the music BUSINESS." So when I got back to NYC, that's what I did. I moved to LA just months later based on their advice. Austin opened me up to the West. To California. The open sky and the mountains and the ocean were all apart of this new world. And I met my wife in LA. And she talks about moving back there every day. Or to Austin, Portland, Spain or France :)

(One of the bands we saw play in Austin that year was "400 Blows")
