I get a lot of looks from hipsters in my hood when I've got my girls with me. (My girls being my daughters). Like, really man? Marriage and kids? And 2? How did that happen? When do you have time to do the things that men need to do? Being single is supposedly the cool thing now. Especially for men. Why settle down when you can play the field. You've got your whole life to be a dad. Which is one of the reasons that having kids now is rock & roll. First off, with a down economy, having kids is a risk. Having 2 is even more of a risk. Taking risks in life is rock & roll. The people that know me don't treat me any differently. They don't call me sir. I still talk to the girls at Stumptown about Portland, The Dandy Warhols and Eagle Rock.
And babies are like iPhones. They are what you make of them. They can challenge you and make you think about the world differently. And number 2 is like an iPad. And if anyone epitomized rock & roll, it was Steve Jobs. It's not easy having kids. Being thrown into a job you really have no training for and people expect you to accept your new identity right away. That's hard. You're always questioning your relevancy when you really should just embrace what you have. And love the ones your with. But you must adapt to the unknown as a new parent. It's like being on the road and knowing that you'll make it home, but you're not sure how.
