some dude responds to "don't call me sir"

 Anonymous (Some Dude):
"I respectfully disagree. Whenever a young person calls an elder "sir" it is a breath of fresh air, a sign of hope, a proof that not all young people are snotty and think they know it all. You can be a dude in your own mind, but let young people be polite and respectful if they so choose. on don't call me sir

Here is the original post:

I was walking home from the park today with d, h and the wife.  These cute girls in their twenties on bikes asked me if I knew where Cafe Pedlar was.  I gave them directions and one of the girls reciprocated by responding "Thank you sir." Sir?  Me?  I'm not a sir.  I'm a guy, I'm a dude, I'm a man, but I'm no sir. When I think about sir, I think about my dad and his generation.  This generation now is not about getting old and being complacent. Although my life has changed with kids, my mentality hasn't. In my mind, age is a state of mind.  I use to stay out all night but now we just start the party early.  It's about incorporating your previous indulgances with your family. Being a "Sir" means giving up on those indulgences.  So if you want to call me anything, just call me "dude" :)

another thing... being called dude, man, homie-g-dizzle,--what have you, won't make you any younger. and "sir" really doesnt mean youre old or part of a "past" generation. sir has been used for hundreds of years just as a respectful pronoun for any guy. even referring to children at times. the illusion that it indicates age is caused by a somewhat personal preference that exists still today, of parents insisting that they use the title "Sir" when speaking to their elders. while only intended to teach their children they should respect those with experience and perspective and speak to them accordingly, it has come to translate to "sir is for old guys" which really isn't, or at least shouldn't be, the case.

first off, in no way do I mean disrespect when I call someone "dude".... I just don't think calling someone sir is way of showing respect...there are other ways to respect your elders...calling someone sir just reminds me of a different generation and one that I'd rather distance myself from. In order to change as a society we have to let some customs go. dz

Homer Simpson got it right; nobody ever calls me 'sir' without following it with 'you're making a scene'.
